Van Gogh lived from 30 March 1853 until he committed suicide on 29 July 1890. He was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter whose work had a far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His oeuvre includes portraits, self portraits, landscapes and still lifes of cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. He suffered from anxieties and mental illnesses.
Amandelbloesem was painted in 1890 when he was living in a clinic in Saint-Rémy. During his stay he received a birth card from his brother, who named his newborn child after him. The painting Amandelbloesem was a gift for this special occasion.
