Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop (Poerworedjo, 20 december 1858 – Den Haag, 3 maart 1928) was one of the most important Dutch artists from the period 1880-1910. At first he painted in an impressionist style, later through the pointillism he developed to be a symbolic painter.
Gebed voor de Maaltijd was painted in 1907 and depicts an idyllic scene in Zeeland, where the painter stayed for several years.
