Pieter Cornelis “Piet” Mondriaan, after 1906 Mondrian, ( March 7, 1872 – February 1, 1944), was a Dutch painter and is most famous for being a contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group. His paintings developed gradually from naturalistic in his early years to a very abstract style in his later years.
In the period 1872 – 1911 Mondriaan lived in the Netherlands. Influenced by the French neo-impressionism and the fauvism, in 1908 he made remarkably colourful, almost aggressive paintings. Although the work is still figurative, it is becoming more and more angular. The summer of 1909 he spent at the coast in Zeeland where he painted several works in this new style. In this year he also painted Gezicht op strand en pier vanaf de duinen.
