Bloomframe® Window

Bloomframe®, the innovative window that morphs magically into a balcony at the touch of a button, is no longer a prototype. The revolutionary and multi-award-winning design is now in production and coming to an urban landscape near you. The first models are installed in an apartment building in Amsterdam in The Netherlands and in a private villa in Switzerland.

The Bloomframe® window offers inhabitants of apartments, offices and hotels the ultimate flexible living environment: an insulated picture window one minute and a fresh, open balcony the next, cleverly adding vital space to compact interiors and bringing the outdoors in. The unique balcony is engineered by French manufacturer PortalP France. It consists of tough all-weather materials and controlled by a smooth electronic system. PortalP is obtaining all the necessary certifications to transform the prototype into a safe and affordable building component. Its dimensions, color and materials are all fully adaptable and can be custom-designed to complement the facade of new and existing buildings.

The Bloomframe® window is playing an essential role in the positive evolution of our cities, encouraging us to re-think and improve interior space options. Bloomframe® helps us live better.

Bloomframe® installation

The first Bloomframe® window was installed in the Amsterdam housing project CPO De Hallen in the facade at the canal on the 2nd floor. The canal facade has a diversity of glass openings and balconies reflecting the personal wishes of the residents. Each apartment has a mirror facade reflecting the surrounding canal, trees or neighbour apartments.

Wallpaper* Design Award

The Bloomframe® window is the winner of the prestigious Wallpaper* Design Award 2009 in the category Most-life-enhancing-product. Wallpaper* Magazine composed for this fifth annual Design Award an esteemed panel of judges. The jury members hip hop star Kanye West, French architect Jean Nouvel, fashion icon Ines de la Fressange, Australian industrial designer Marc Newson, British production designer Sir Ken Adam and Yves Saint Laurent designer Stefano Pilati selected the innovative Bloomframe® window as the winner.

Words from the jury: ‘’If you have ever been haunted by the feeling of being boxed in, then Dutch concept ‘Bloomframe’ is an ingenious solution. It may look just like your typical black-framed window, but at the touch of a button, the entire frame pushes outwards, like a flower in full bloom, to transform into a bijou balcony.’’

Wallpaper* Magazine organized a photo shoot with the jury members of the Wallpaper Design Award 2009 and their favorite winning product. The Lego study model of the Bloomframe® window was send to London for the photo shoot with the renowned production designer sir Ken Adam. Sir Ken Adam designed the semi-futuristic sets for the James Bond films such as Dr. No (1962), Goldfinger (1964), Thunderball (1965), You Only Live Twice (1967), Diamonds Are Forever (1971), The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) and Moonraker (1979).
