Johannes Theodorus (Jan) Toorop (Poerworedjo, 20 december 1858 – Den Haag, 3 maart 1928) was one of the most important Dutch artists from the period 1880-1910. At first he painted in an impressionist style, later through the pointillism he developed to be a symbolic painter.
Gebed voor de Maaltijd was painted in 1907 and depicts an idyllic scene in Zeeland, where the painter stayed for several years.

The floor pattern based on Gebed voor de maaltijd is projected on the 10th floor of Castalia. This is a floor of the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport, so the painting used here reflects on these themes. This office floor holds open and closed working places, meeting rooms and a lounge for informal meeting.
