Pieter Cornelis “Piet” Mondriaan, after 1906 Mondrian, ( March 7, 1872 – February 1, 1944), was a Dutch painter and is most famous for being a contributor to the De Stijl art movement and group. Before this he explored different styles.
In the period 1872 – 1911 Mondriaan lived in the Netherlands, partly in Winterswijk. The painting ‘Winterswijk’ was painted in 1888. Most of his work from this period is naturalistic or impressionistic, consisting largely of landscapes.
