Galgeriet Monnickendam
Overlooking Markermeer lake, Monnickendam has a strong connection with trade and fish. The small Dutch city has a historical centre characterized by small buildings with recognizable brick façades. Plans for the transformation of Galgeriet, an outdated harbour district, built upon existing qualities to create a new neighbourhood.
Property developer BPD invited different architects to collectively work on the façades of individual buildings. Like the city centre, they vary in size and roof type and will result in a harmonious diversity.
The housing is based on local characteristics of brick architecture, fishing culture and ship building innovation

Historic reflections
HomanDujardin was inspired by the history of Monnickendam as a city famous for its fish market. Besides the historical buildings, an analysis of the appearance of local fish species informed the façade designs. Each façade combines regular brickwork with a pattern of custom glazed bricks. They light up in sunlight and resemble glossy fish skins. Although all unique, the façades create a recognizable unity.
